In the 1960s, the U.S. Armed Forces Procurement Office in Japan chose to source camouflage uniforms locally. This decision was driven by Japan’s advanced printing technology, fast production capabilities, and cost efficiency. Since the camouflage patterns were entrusted to individual factories across Japan, countless variations of the iconic Tiger Stripe pattern emerged. While many of the early Tiger Stripes were made in Japan, some were sewn in Okinawa using Japanese fabric, and later in the Vietnam War, production expanded to nearby regions such as Thailand and Vietnam.
